Firstly, the staff are all lovely and very accomodating even at busy times. They are all extremely polite and do their best to make your stay be the best it can be.
The grounds themselves are beautiful, with hundreds of years of history both inside and outside the castle. You are free to roam around at all hours and partake in a history trail. There are many placards around the hotel/castle so that you can learn plenty while there.
The small town of Ruthin is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel.
The food is also excellent, if not slightly overpriced. However, eating in the medieval themed "Tafarn y ddraig" makes it worth the price. Certainly a unique experience.
Now onto the negatives. This is not a cheap hotel by any standard, with even the cheapest rooms costing over £100 a night. With the standard room that I stayed in, I found it to be a bit dirty, particularly the carpet, with many dog hairs and flakes of old mud in it. This continued into the bathroom, which was spacious. However, there was a strange damp odour coming from it, probably because it was a wet room with poor ventilation. As an aside, the water pressure and temperature was very low. This meant that filling the huge bath took well over 1 hour.
Overall, it is a unique experience that you will not regret. The food is tasty, the grounds are beautiful and the staff make you feel welcome. If you have the budget, go for a room upgrade to really feel like the King of the castle.
