excellent stay in a mountain village above Amalfi
We stayed over a week at Miramare and this enabled us to visit all the famous places as well as to relax in the village and at the B&B where there are several places to sit outside. Our room was fine, with everything we needed (except a kettle). The owner and family were lovely and looked after us well. Homemade cakes and cheese were included in the breakfast buffet. The view from the breakfast terrace is spectacular. We were shown round the animal area (with its sheep, chickens, goat and horse) by the two sons, who spoke English. There are places to eat locally in the evening and we mostly went to a local hotel where pizzas are made in an open oven. It is possible to walk down an ancient path, mostly on steps, to Amalfi, taking about 2 hours. The walk of the gods is well worth the effort, with excellent views of the sea and fantastic places such as Positano. We were able to travel by public transport to Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum and this was inexpensive and less hair-raising than driving by car on tortuous routes. The bus to Amalfi is often very busy and one must be prepared to stand at times. It is also necessary to purchase a ticket before getting on the bus. During our visit we observed a local wedding and funeral, elderly women collecting walnuts, locals drying strings of tomatoes and pickling aubergines, long thin tree stems used for supports in for vines. We also attended the church and tried to follow the service in Italian.
