Check if the castle does light up at night during your stay."

"This hotel is an easy walk up the street from the train station and there are numerous dining options in the area. Good home base for exploring Matsumoto. The hotel itself is nice, but the rooms are rather small, if you are used to "Western" accommodations. The baths are very nice, segregated and get a lot of use. The free laundry (wash was free, dryer was not) was a nice feature for travelers. They also offer a free bow of ramen at night!"

"This is out of town, but I’m a sucker for traditional onsen ryokan. This place has aged well, rooms are spacious, there is a private onsen on the top floor for 40min usage, and there are a couple of great restaurants 10mins walking distance around.
