"lili kyoto is not a typical hotel. It is small — three units on the ground floor, probably about the same on the floor above (I didn’t take the elevator up to check). It is totally unstaffed; to get in the front door you must obtain a code from the owner/manager. I got mine by having a nice lady in the Kyoto railway station tourist office call the owner/manager, who promptly emailed instructions. The front “lobby” and hallway are unheated. There is no breakfast buffet, no vending machines, none...

"We booked in here on a short trip to Kyoto where we wanted an authentic local experience but didn’t have time to travel out into the rural regions. This was the perfect place. I was hoping the bar would be a gathering spot for all the guests, but I never saw it open (appears to be by reservation?) That we were encouraged to return by 9 PM was also a bit onerous (given it is 30 minutes from the city centre), but an understandable part of the guesthouse experience."
